HOW TO USE YOUR LUCKY BEDFORDSHIRE
- Wash it.
- Drop it into the family pot - soup, curry or rice water - with 2–3 drops of lime juice.
- Boil for 10 minutes.
- Take it out with a spoon. Dry it well so it keeps its strength.
Used at every meal, one cast-iron Bedfordshire releases up to 7 mg of absorbable iron a day - most of what a mother and her children need.
Field note. The first campaign handed out plain iron ingots. They measured perfectly and ended up as doorstops and fishing weights; nobody cooks with a lump. When the same iron was cast in a lucky shape, it went into the pot every day, and anemia in the villages fell within a year. The iron was always the same. The shape is the medicine.
